Refresher training should be considered if:

  • it has been about 3-5 years since the initial training; or
  • the RPS has not been active in the role for a period of time; or
  • new and different radiation work begins; or
  • new legislation is introduced

CLEAPSS: Supporting Safe Practical Microbiology

This intensive course covers all the essentials of H&S and aseptic technique that are necessary for safe and effective KS3, GCSE and A level microbiology practicals. The course is entirely “hands on” so you will gain confidence as you practice the skills during the day. At the end of the course you can take away the cultures and plates you have made, to watch them develop.

CLEAPSS keep it safe! Health and safety in practical science for new teachers.  

This one day course will de-bunk a few myths and look at legal requirements and the duties of teachers and their employers. Activities in the lab that commonly give rise to problems will be highlighted and discussed, and there will be opportunities to discuss each participant’s own safety concerns.

CLEAPSS: Reduced and Micro-scale Chemistry

A One-day course for teachers and technicians. Practical procedures for pupils using conventional equipment are often time-consuming and left out of teaching, consequently lowering pupil expectations of secondary school science. Small-scale chemistry is quick, saves on chemicals and offers variety in presentation. The course covers a variety of small scale alternatives to traditional approaches.

CLEAPSS Supporting Safe & Successful Classroom Physics

This 1-day course is designed to enable secondary school science laboratory technicians to be more confident in supporting the teaching of practical physics. It also provides a valuable opportunity for technicians to meet together and share expertise.

CLEAPSS: Working with Glass

This one-day practical course is designed for science technicians who have little physics knowledge and are inexperienced with the physics equipment used in science departments. 
The objective of the course is to enable technicians to gain some of the basic skills required to support physics teaching so that they can carry out their jobs with greater confidence. They will have the opportunity to set up circuits, use a multimeter, solder, consider some common hazards in physics, identify, set up and use a variety of physics equipment.

CLEAPSS: Preproom Management and Health & Safety for Senior Technicians

This one-day discussion based course is intended for senior technicians or those aspiring to become senior technicians, although less experienced technicians are welcome to attend and will pick up useful tips. The objective of the course is to explore and share ideas for running an efficient and effective prep room. The main emphasis will be on Health & Safety law, what the law requires of technicians, organizing the prep room, supporting practical work and leading a technician team.

Science teaching has a very good health and safety record. Nevertheless science teachers need to be with health and safety legislation as there are many potentially hazardous chemicals, living organisms, pieces of equipment and procedures in use in school science laboratories.

CLEAPSS: Microscope Maintenance

This one-day practical course is designed for science technicians with little knowledge or experience of using and servicing school microscopes. The objective of the course is to provide technicians with the skills and knowledge so they can confidently carry out routine maintenance tasks and tackle straightforward repairs. This will cover the majority of faults normally found in microscopes, potentially saving money spent on buying in the services of a professional microscope technician.
